Philosophy of Teaching
My personal philosophy is to establish a strong student teacher relationship in which students feel comfortable approaching with any subject matter. It is important for teachers to have a good rapport with students in order to make the learning environment ideal. An environment where students feel free to make is mistakes are what I have found makes them most comfortable with using their second language. It is my duty as a leader and educator to provide knowledge and information to my students. I am there for my students and believe in every one of their abilities to learn and master new topics. As an educator I provide up-to-date materials for my students, even when I have to create the materials myself because students come first. When a student does not feel as if they are the most important, they lose motivation and hope. It is my philosophy by creating a safe environment in which students have a strong connection to myself, as a teacher, allows for more successful learning.
Teacher's roles and responsibilities
As a teacher it is both my role and responsibility to lead the class. Students need someone they can trust and look up to in order to help guide them along the path of acquiring new knowledge. I will encourage the students to come forward if they need help in by having office hours daily. The students will be welcome to stop by at anytime. It is my duty as a teacher to provide my time and support for all my students. When students come to me for help I always make myself available to go out of the way to help those reaching out to further their knowledge of the language. My main goal in teaching is for students to remember the class as one of their favorites, while providing valuable information they will retain for future use to build upon. I encourage fun new learning approaches and hope to provide a number of outlets in which students can learn. I am both a prompter and an assessor giving students feedback in the manor fit for the their learning exchange. The students use my knowledge as a valuable resource in which they ask me questions at any time, and I provide my honest feedback.
Culture and Linguistic Diversity
Students will always be culturally and linguistically diverse even if they are from the same area, especially in my school. The student’s culture and language ideology must be taken into account as well, as they will be unable to make connections if the students are unfamiliar with cultural topics. Therefore it is important to keep in mind a student’s beliefs and thoughts about aspects of learning. Learning and culture are intertwined, therefore I believe it’s important to incorporate cultural knowledge of the United States or in this case Hawaii, to create discussions of how the student’s culture relates to and influences their decisions in everyday life.
Motivation for Students
Motivation is one of the most important factors for an education. So it is important to keep in mind not all approached educational approaches will work for all students, nor will the same approach continue to work for the same students. I take the time to try and seamless put together units that cover all the different learning dimensions. I provide individual weekly meetings with students, explaining their tasks for the week and clearing up important questions they may have. Students feel more comfortable sharing information and asking for help in a private setting opposed to in front of a whole class. This gives students a better understanding of what I need out of each of them as well as provide a sense, for the both of us, of how the student is doing in the course. Therefore, I approach each student as an individual and try to find what works best for him or her as discussed in our weekly meetings.
Education Effectiveness and Communication
It is my hope that I will be an effective education and plan to continue my education and go through on going evaluations to ensure that I am providing the most effective education possible. It is also my hope that parents and students alike will continue to hold me accountable as well, in terms of communicating what is working and not working for their child. I will establish weekly communication with the families via email. One a week on Monday’s the families will receive an email blast with a rundown of what their child is learning for the week, items due, or other important announcements. I also have a website available where parents are able to see a calendar of the upcoming units and due dates. Should the need arise I will call parents depending on the situation, however my number will be listed on the site, and parents are encouraged to call should they need anything.
Overall, I want to encourage students to want an education and further pursue their education after my class. Having the individual attention and encouragement will help the students succeed in my class and in life. An education and understanding of different cultures really enhances lives. It is my hope to create a lasting impact on these students.
