The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

The artifact I have in a notice/wonder chart as filled in by a student. This was the start of a write up on their favorite sport. The notice wonder chart was given to specific students to help them pull out certain things from a broad topic. A student may have trouble writing about a topic, asking questions is a great way to guide the self-directed research. This self-directed research is a gateway for critical thinking. The use of technology is then used for this research in order to develop a more rounded write-up. By providing this chart it helps the students to become more independent self-directed learners.

The teacher was teaching the students about probability. Instead of just showing the way to calculate probability using numbers (say 2 shirts, 3 pants, 1 pair of shoes, what are the possible outcomes) the teacher showed other students the branching method. Taking it one step further after helping students to make connections between the numbers (2x3x1) and the branches they were given the opportunity to create their own. This particular student decided to use sonic as it's target. Using sonic's moves the student calculated the total number of possible outcomes. I really like how the teacher allowed the students to make connections to the real work and create their own problems.
