I have attached an anchor chart from our unit on the novel A Long Walk to Water. The students follow two stories from a girl and a boy in southern Sudan. Both main characters face different challenges, we ask the students to not only compare Nya and Salva's stories but to compare the stories to their own. An example from the text is Nya has to walk 8 hours round trip twice a day to get water for her family. At first, the students asked why she didn't just get it from her kitchen, many did not understand that our idea of a standard house and standard amenities are not so "standard". Through a series of activities, we had the students question and analyze these differences and come up with possible solutions in order to help them understand the differences in other cultures and people's lives.
